Places to Travel in Samsun

Samsun, the largest city in the Black Sea Region, is the most assertive tourist destination. The city is an excellent place for summer and winter tourism, heritage tourism and nature tourism. Turkish War of Independence led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, started in Samsun and, the city still carries its traces. Samsun has several museums and monuments about the War of Independence. Bandırma Ferry, Tobacco Pier, Ataturk Memorial and Gazi Museum, and many other places in the city are worth visiting to have knowledge about the war. In addition to this, there are also historical evidence related to Amazon Women who had lived in Samsun such as the Amazon Island and the Amazon Statue.

In Samsun, there are locations for summer tourism; especially Atakum Sahilleri which is the first choice for swimming in the sea due to its position close to the city center. On the other hand, Ladik Akdağ ski Center is a perfect example for winter season tourism.

Amazon Island

Amazan Island, also known as Amazon Village is one of the tourist attractions in Samsun and located in the western part of the city center. The island, had been built by Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, offers magnificent views of the coasts of Black Sea and is visited by tourists.

In the city center of Samsun, East Park sits on the east shore while West Park, on the west shore.These two parks cover a fairly large green area. West Park was established in 2010 and, the park is newer park comparing the other one. It is possible to see the traces of Amazon Warrior Women who are thought to have lived in Samsun.

Amazon Island is an artificial island and had been transformed into a region by a canal that is separated from the land. Access to the island is provided by bridge. The Amazon Female Statue where is at the entrance of the island, is a total height of 12.5 meters. 24 meters length Anatolian Lion Statue is situated right across to this female statue. If you are interested in the life of mythical women warriors of Amazon, there are exhibitions in the west park. The cave houses, tents, prisons, wax sculptures, war instruments and daily life items, which costs about € 500.000, are exhibited in Amazon Village.

The entrance fee of Amazon Village is 1 TL (0.26 cents) and, the village is open between 09:00 and 17:00.

To reach the Amazon Island, you can either take a minibus to Atakum district or use the tram to Baruthane Station.

The Monument of Atatürk

One of the symbols of Samsun is the Monument of Atatürk. This monument, also known as the The Monument of Honor, is located in the city center of Samsun. The Atatürk Monument was erected at this point where he started the War of Independence In this respect, the monument has both a symbolic and a historical significance for the city.

The Monument of Honor was built on 19 May 1927 and completed on 29 October 1931 by the Austrian sculptor Heinrich Krippel. The Monument of Atatürk, the work of Heinrich Krippel's fourth monument in Turkey, took its place in history as the 13th monument of the Republican History.

The monument was made of bronze. For the sculpture with a height of 4.75 meters, $ 37,000  was spent including the payment of sculptor($ 5,500).

The Monument of Atatürk is situated in a park with identical name "Atatürk Park". This park has playground for children, benches, toilets and, a cafe.

SS Bandırma Ship Museum

Samsun, the place where Turkish War of Independence started, has many historical sites about this war. The SS Bandırma Ship is the ship which Atatürk used to reached to Samsun from Istanbul and, now it is exhibited in Samsun. The ship is the replica of the same size of the original ship. The replica was built in 1999 and opened in 2001. SS Bandırma, which is operated by Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, is one of the most visited places in Samsun,

The wax sculptures of Atatürk and fellow soldiers and, various items inside the museum was prepared on a real scale.

The cost SS Bandırma Ship Museum for an adult is  1 TL however, the entrance fee for a student is only the half of the price.

Gazi Museum

During the Turkish War of Independence, when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk came to Samsun , he stayed at Mantıka Palas Hotel twice in 1928 and 1930. The hotel, used as Republican People's Party Building, theatre and library. After the restoration of the hotel, the structure transformed into a museum called "Gazi Museum" in 1940 at the city center of Samsun. You can see the Atatürk's study room, bedroom, meeting room and his personal belongings inside the museum.

Çiftlik Street

Çiftlik Street, which means "farm" in English, is one of the most popular places in Samsun. There are many stores and restaurants on the 700 meters length Çiftlik Street. The street was restored by Samsun Metropolitan Municipality in 2014 and pedestrianized. After the restoration Çiftlik Street was named as Çiftlik Street Shopping Mall.

Samsun City Museum

Samsun City Museum, which is one of the places to travel in Samsun, opened on February 12, 2013. The museum exhibits social, historical, cultural, geographical and economic data, as well as materials and documents belonging to Samsun city.

You may visit the museum between 8 AM and 5 PM.

Tobacco Pier and Independence Road

Tobacco Pier (Tütün İskelesi) is a symbolic point where Atatürk and his 18 friends  arrived to Samsun. Actually, the initial point is where the Monument of Atatürk is situated. Accompanied by the growth of the city over the time, the coastline of Samsun was filled and the sea line has moved away.  The pier, resembles some kind of open-air museum, opened to visitors on May 29, 2009.

Independence Road (Kurtuluş Yolu), where Atatürk and his fellow soldiers came to Samsun to start Turkish War of Indepence, represents the beginning of liberation struggle.

Sukay Water Slide Center

Sukay Water Slide Center in Samsun, is the first water skiing in Black Sea. Sukay was opened on 1 July 2011 by Samsun Metropolitan Municipality. Also, Sukay is the first open sea wakeboarding in Turkey,

There are water slide training park, beach, camping area, trailer park, resting and watching platforms, cafe, wireless internet connection and volleyball field in the Water Slide Center

Atakum Beach

Atakum is a district located 10 kilometers away from the city center of Samsun. Especially in summer season, it is has quite lively night life.

Atakum Beach consists of bars, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs. Some of the events that you can particapate in swimming, fishing, cycling and jogging.

Ladik Akdag Ski Resort

Akdag Ski Center where located in Ladik, a district located 84 kilometers away from the city center, is an important tourist destination.

Akdağ, has an average height of 1500 meters. There is a teleski in the ski resort built by Samsun Metropolitan Municipality. The single use fee for the chair lift is 5 TL and the daily usage fee is 25 TL.
