Places to Travel in Bochum

Bochum, located in Northern Rhein-Westphalia in Germany, is the center of Ruhr Area. You can reach the information about Bochum, where has a population of nearly 400.000, on this page.

The city, one of the 20th biggest city in Germany, has 6 universities. Ruhr University is one of the best universities in the country among these universities and has over 30.000 students. In respect to this, the student population in Bochum is quite high comparing to other cities.

German Mining Museum

Ruhr, one of the richest regions of Europe in terms of coal reserves, had been rich in this respect coal extraction and exploitation during the Industrial Revolution. Bochum contributed the development of the coal extraction. While the coal mines in Germany was shut down due to increased costs and security risks in coal operation, the German Mining Museum in Bochum shows the developments in this area.

Besides of being the world's largest mining museum, the German Mining Museum is one of the most visited museums in Germany with the average of 400 visitors per year. Also the museum, functions as a research institute, is quite extensive. Miniatures and real mining equipment are exhibited in the museum. 30 thousand years of the improvement on mining science and technology is clearly seen in the museum.

The last production at the German Mining Museum, formerly used as a coal mine, took place on 11 January 2000. The tunnel, inside the museum, has a total length of 2.5 kilometers. You can go down in the lift by 20 meters. 

Zeiss Planetarium Bochum

The Bochum Zeiss Planetarium, was established in 1964, is one of the largest and modern planet houses in the world and one of the most important places on the Bochum sightseeing list.

Zeiss Planetarium offers a special reflecting show the artificial images of sun, stars, planets, and other celestial objects into a dome-shaped ceiling with a special reflective system. You can participate in the show by buying an online ticket to the Bochum Zeiss Planetarium where has the high quality of audio and visual systems. You can listen the show both in German and English.

Ruhr Park

Germany's largest shopping village, Ruhr Park, is one of the places to visit in Bochum. The shopping center, which has an area of 113,000 square meters, has a parking lot for 6,500 cars.

With parking spaces, quality restaurants and dinners, quality stores, you can shop for every budget. In addition, the city's largest movie theaters are located in the Ruhr Park. You can take  the buses, number 344, 355, 364 and 366, to the Ruhr Park in Bochum. There are a total of 3 bus stops around the shopping mall.


Bermuda3eck, called Bermudadreieck due to its triangular structure and inferred Bermuda Triangle, is one of the most important entertainment and meeting points of Bochum city. The area of Bermuda3eck, spread over a 2-kilometer area, has bars, restaurants and movie theaters. In Bermuda3eck is where is visited by 3 million people annually.

The region is also hosting the Bochum Street Festival in July. However, festivals and entertainments are held at national and international scale. To get to Bermuda3eck you can use the Bochum tram line called Stadtbahn, or you can take the buses 308, 318.

Bochum Botanical Garden

The Bochum Botanical Garden in Ruhr University is one of the places to visit in the city. There are dozens of different kinds of flowers and trees in the botanical garden, and many different kinds of themed gardens.

The Chinese themed garden is among the most popular gardens in the Botanical Garden. Along with plant passages, it has spectacular details on various stones and architecture.

Bochum City Park

Bochum City Park, known as Stadtpark Bochum, was founded in 1878 alike English Garden. The city park, had been enlarged, offers beautiful images of colorful flowers in the summer season.

The park contains monuments and small dimensions of architectural structures. Busts and sculptures of famous people have been added to various points since the park was opened. One of the most interesting aspects of the park is the Zoo. At the bottom you can find detailed information about the Bochum Zoo.

Bochum Zoo

The area, which serves as the Zoo and the Fossil Museum, has 1.9 hectares of gardens. The first guests of the Bochum Zoo, which opened on March 3, 1933, were deer, sheep and predatory birds. Over the time, the zoo was expanded and had been added to the aquarium, fossil section and other cages.

The Bochum Zoo was destroyed by bombs during World War II on June 24, 1943, and was renovated between 1973 and 2012 under the leadership of Eduard Stirnberg. Areas such as maintenance facility and mating center were opened in Zoo.

Bochum Dahlhausen Railway Museum

The Bochum Railway Museum, opened in 2011, is one of the tourist attractions in the city. You can see things like trains, garages, coal transportation facilities, cranes and towers at the Bochum Railway Museum, which began to be used as a museum with the regulation of an old train station. There are also exhibition halls within the museum. The 46,000-square-meter area is also exhibited Germany's largest railway museum at the Bochum Railway Museum

Stiepel Village Church

Another tourist attraction is The Stiepel Village Church where in Stiepel Village in the southern part of Bochum. The  thousand-year church is the one of the earliest structures in the city. In 1988, the church along with the historical cemetery and the monument took under preservation.

The village of Stiepel, near the Ruhr River and Lake Kemnader, is about 110 meters above sea level. The region is very interesting place for heritage tourism.

The Bochum Art Museum

The Bochum Art Collection Museum, built in 1960 at the Villa Marckhoff-Rosenstein building, and moved to a new building, built by Danish architects Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert in 1983.
